Caster and Pollux

If you head west on the Brighton beach path, pass the main pier and the carousel, then you will arrive at my favorite gallery in this city. Situated under the seafront road arches Caster and Polloux is a haven of prints, affordable jewellery and gifts as well as a nicely stocked arty bookshop.

The gallery sells affordable modern prints and artwork by artists such as Rob Ryan, Quentin Blake and Charlie Harper, you can see more of the people that are stocked here. The space is not huge but big enough to make a special trip into town, the gallery is refreshing and always an inspiration.

There are also events which take place at the gallery, Amelia Gregory gave a talk and did a book signing not too long ago which got me all excited, it is well worth keeping an eye on what these guys are up to, you can follow them on Twitter or visit them on the Caster and Pollux website.

Present and Correct

Inspiration Monday # 016

Now there’s nothing more inspiring than some new stationery, come on, you know that you’ve got a secret obsession, well mine’s no secret. I’ve had a stationery “problem” ever since I can remember, as a child I wasted hours arranging my little desk in my bedroom. Much to my parents annoyance I had sticky labels marking the positions of my  ”hole punch”, “pen pot”, “ruler”, “sellotape” etc… I had a tins full of sickly sweet smelling rubbers shaped like buckets and spades, bunny heads and rainbows, boxes of pencils organised in spectrums and cupboards full of notebooks. I guess that my obsession peaked at 17 when I took a job at office world, mmmm happy memories…

Anyway, about 18 months or so ago I came across this little website called Present and Correct, they are based in the UK and sell a selection vintage and handmade utterly beautiful stationery, from note cards to typewriters. Just browsing on their site brings a feeling of nostalga, there are original pens from the 60′s, masking tapes in a rainbow of colours and pencil sharpners with five holes, imagine that, it truly is the stuff that dreams are made of. They often have one off pieces which you need to be quick to catch, I’ve missed out on some real treats in the past.

Present and Correct are also on Etsy, oh and so am I

Makers Boutique (revisited)

Rock Cakes has lots of things planned for the second half of 2011, with the next date being Makers Boutique, it is taking place this Saturday, July 23rd (ie tomorrow).

For the first time we will be taking part in an event at Brighton’s beautiful Unitarian Church, which is right in the heart of the Laines by Brighton Dome (BN1 1UF). There will, as ever, be a group of makers creating a wide selection of items, from prints to plush toys and jewellery to glassware.

The event will be running from 10:30am to 5pm and yes, there will be tea and cakes for sale.

Rock Cakes will be selling a selection Precious Jewellery, Acrylics and Cards and I am super happy for you to just come and say hi, try on the jewellery and ask any questions that you may have, I promise that I am very friendly and helpful.

If you cant make the July event then the next Makers Boutique is on August 27th at the same venue or email me to make a private appointment. Or you can simply check out the bling in our Etsy shop and on the website.
